A $1 Billion Casino Resort is being planned for Metro Manila, Billionaire Manuel Villar Jr.

The integrated casino resort that billionaire Manuel Villar Jr. plans to build there will completely overhaul the Global South retail shopping center in Metro Manila. One of the biggest landowners in the Philippines, Manuel Villar also develops both commercial and residential properties. Villar recently disclosed to the media his plans to turn the 200-acre site, formerly home to the Global South shopping mall, into a casino and entertainment complex. Villar, who has an estimated $7.8 billion in net worth, is the second-richest person in the Philippines, according to Forbes.

Licenses and Partnerships

Villar added that he has spoken with international gaming operators about the new resort project and may reveal a casino partnership in the upcoming months. He added that he intends to model the scope and size of his brand-new casino resort after the well-known Solaire resort. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) issued Villar a gaming license in 2019, but COVID halted his 2019 plans. In order to use his prior gaming license for his new Global South project, Villar received authorization from PAGCOR.

How many additional casinos will there be in the Philippines?

At least three new casinos are currently under construction in the Philippines, the majority of them in the Metro Manila region because it is the country’s top tourist destination. There is no doubt that the Philippines wants to add new resorts and casinos to its existing gaming infrastructure in order to draw tourists and generate income for the nation. Due to its proximity to the airport and popularity as a tourist destination, we anticipate the addition of a number of additional domestic casinos to the Metro Manila gaming area in the future. Some would argue that the sky is the only limit as population and tourism keep expanding, but if you’ve ever been to Manila, you know that we also build resorts into the sky.

Are resort casinos permitted to provide online gambling to Filipinos?

No. Online gambling services cannot be provided to Filipino citizens by domestic casinos in the country. Resort Casinos may apply for a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) license in order to offer online poker, sports betting, and casino games to citizens of other nations but not their own.
